Pure Magazine… Derry?
Once in a blue moon I get the rare opportunity to blog about something close to home. When most people think of Derry, aka. The Walled City unpleasant things spring to mind. The past couple of months a new magazine has been in circulation locally – Pure Magazine. The magazine covers topics like entertainment, lifestyle, fashion, reviews, interiors and food and drink. I stumbled upon the magazine randomly, because unfortunately they don’t actually deliver to my part of town.
The first thing that caught my eye was the names of the magazine designers listed inside, who were none other than Barry McGilloway and Noel Heaney, two former class mates of mine at University. Barry is a talented Photographer and Graphic Designer, and he helped me with some photography in my final year. Barry graduated with a 1st Class Honors Degree in Communication Design in 2008. Although I was less familiar with Noel’s work, Noel was also known to be an exceptional Graphic Designer.
Pure Magazine have a few editions out now and the content is continually getting better. This month’s Halloween Edition, the magazine featured an interview with Jamie Oliver. One feature I really like about the magazine is the Local Talent section, which features local artists, designers and illustrators - right up my street. I’m definitely one of those people that would be more inclined to look at the pictures than read articles.
As a recently established die-hard fan of US smash cult drama True Blood, I adored this month’s edition with the exclusive they had on the Season 1. Pure Magazine are definitely raising the standard of publications locally producing work of this standard. Have a look at the Pure Magazine website to check out the online version of the magazine. Or if you’re local call in and ask them for a copy at 10 Carlisle Road, Derry – nothing beats the feel of a nice new glossy magazine!
